Forget the nail-into-skin method. There's a faster way.

Three steps

  1. Slice off the top and bottom. Just enough to expose the flesh — a centimetre.
  2. Make one vertical cut through the skin only, top to bottom.
  3. Roll the skin off in one piece.

Total time: about 30 seconds.

Why it works

The skin separates cleanly along the vertical cut. No fingernail digging. No spray. No bitter pith stuck under your nails for an hour.

Same trick works for grapefruits and tangerines. Mandarins are still easier with your hands.

Bonus

Cut into segments along the natural lines for a clean fruit plate. Two minutes for three oranges. Done.
